Discover One of Prague’s Most Fascinating Jewish Legends
Prague is home to countless historical treasures, but few stories capture the imagination quite like the legend of the Golem and the great Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, known worldwide as the Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel (Maharal of Prague).
For Jewish travelers, history enthusiasts, and visitors exploring Prague’s Jewish heritage, the story of the Maharal and the Golem offers a unique glimpse into the spiritual, cultural, and mystical traditions of Jewish Prague.
Who Was the Maharal of Prague?
The Maharal of Prague (1525–1609) was one of the most influential Jewish scholars, philosophers, and rabbis in European Jewish history. Serving as the chief rabbi of Prague, he became renowned for his profound teachings on Jewish philosophy, ethics, education, and mysticism.
The Maharal lived during a remarkable period of Prague’s history, when the city was one of Europe’s most important centers of Jewish learning and culture. His writings continue to be studied in Jewish communities worldwide.
Today, visitors can pay their respects at his grave in the historic Old Jewish Cemetery, one of the most visited Jewish sites in Europe.
The Legend of the Golem
According to Jewish folklore, the Maharal created a Golem—a giant figure made from clay taken from the banks of the Vltava River.
The story tells that during a time of growing antisemitism and false accusations against Prague's Jewish community, the Maharal used sacred knowledge and mystical traditions to bring the clay figure to life. The Golem's purpose was to protect the Jewish people from persecution and danger.
The creature was said to possess immense strength and faithfully served the community. However, as the legend continues, the Golem eventually became difficult to control. Realizing the potential danger, the Maharal removed the sacred parchment that gave the Golem life, returning it to its original state.
Where Is the Golem Today?
One of Prague's enduring mysteries is the belief that the remains of the Golem still rest somewhere within the attic of the famous Old-New Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in Europe.
Although there is no historical evidence that the Golem ever existed, the legend has become an inseparable part of Prague's identity. Visitors from around the world come to the Jewish Quarter hoping to learn more about this fascinating tale and the extraordinary rabbi who inspired it.
The attic itself is not open to the public, adding to the mystery and intrigue surrounding the story.
The Maharal's Lasting Legacy
Beyond the legend of the Golem, the Maharal's true legacy lies in his scholarship, leadership, and spiritual teachings. His influence can still be felt throughout Jewish thought, education, and philosophy today.
A visit to Prague's Jewish Quarter allows travelers to explore:
The historic Old-New Synagogue
The remarkable Old Jewish Cemetery

The fascinating Maisel Synagogue
Together, these sites tell the story of one of Europe's oldest and most influential Jewish communities.
